UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team was picked third in the Atlantic 10's Preseason Golf Pool, the conference announced Thursday.
Â
Richmond, also picked third in last year's preseason poll, is coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2018 A-10 Golf Championship. The Spiders have finished in the top five at the conference championship in each of coach Adam Decker's 13 seasons with the Spiders.
Â
Defending champion Davidson finished atop the preseason poll, receiving nine of 11 first-place votes and 118 total points. VCU came in second with 104 points and the other two first-place votes. Richmond was third with 100 points.
Â
The Spiders won their only A-10 title in 2017, when current juniors Zack Justice and Andrew Sciarretta paced Richmond to an 11-stroke victory by firing 54 hole scores of 209 (-7), tied for second on the individual leaderboard.
Â
In addition to Justice and Sciaretta, this year's team features senior Ben Wanichek, who recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in three starts this fall, and sophomore Michael Baker, who registered the first two top-20 finishes of his career during the fall campaign.
Â
Freshman Michael Childress, who teamed with Baker for three years at Cannon School in Concord, N.C., will also play a big part for the Spiders. He finished tied for 13th at this month's Mobile Intercollegiate, the first of Richmond's five tournaments scheduled for this spring.
Â
The 2019 A-10 Golf Championships will be held April 26-28 at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla.
