RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond senior kicker Griffin Trau (Hanover, N.H.) has been selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the 2019-20 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Trau has been awarded his position in the Czech Republic with an English teaching assistantship.
The Fulbright Program is devoted to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Fulbright is the world's largest and most diverse international educational exchange program. Grantees will join the ranks of distinguished participants in the program. Fulbright alumni have become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs, and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists, and teachers. They include 59 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 72 MacArthur Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, and thousands of leaders across the private, public and non-profit sectors.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 370,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Over 1,900 U.S. students, artists and early career professionals in more than 100 different fields of study are offered Fulbright Program grants to study, teach English, and conduct research annually in over 140 countries throughout the world.
The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation by the United States Congress to the U.S. Department of State and managed by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations in foreign countries and in the United States also provide direct and indirect support.
The University of Richmond has been recognized as a Top Producer of Fulbrights for both the U.S. Student and Faculty Scholar Programs for 2018-2019, one of only 11 institutions to do so.
Trau was chosen to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District first team for the second time in 2018 and was honored on the FCS Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team. He graduated with a degree in Leadership Studies & International Studies and earned his Master's Degree in Liberal Arts in December. Trau was named as the Jepson School of Leadership Studies Student-Athlete of the Year in 2017.
On the field, Trau concluded his career as one of the most successful kickers Spider history. His 46 career field goals rank second all-time at Richmond and is the Spiders' second-leading scorer with 248 points. Trau made 81% (47-of-58) of his field goals, which is one of the highest percentages in FCS history.
