
Fred Hardy Invitational: Day Two

Richmond, Va. - The Spiders competed in the second day of the Fred Hardy Invitational - several Spiders set personal records, qualified for ECAC Championship meets, and the 4x400 relay set a new outdoor program record.

The day kicked off with the women's long jump. Four Spiders competed, but Rebekah Greene took the top Richmond spot with a final distance of 5.63m, tying for third overall. The 100m hurdles saw Haley Berkeley, Tania Matthews and Amaya Jackson compete for times of 14.90, 15.12 and 15.91 respectively. The 100m dash had three Spiders compete. Tamar Accius, Tania Matthews and Greene went out for times of 12.30, 12.45 and 12.82 for fourth, fifth and tenth places respectively.
Rachel Helbling raced as the lone Spider in the 400m sprint, winning the event with a time of 55.08 which qualified her for the ECAC Championships this May. A team of Matthews, Accius, Morgan Towe and Haley Berkeley competed in the 4x100m relay, taking first overall with a time of 46.36 just two tenths of a second off the school record, qualifying for ECAC Championships.
In the 200m sprint, Helbling faced a tight turnaround, but crossed the line sixth overall with a time of 25.35. Behind her were Amaya Jackson (26.24), Towe (26.36) and Grace Mittl (27.29) in 10th, 13th and 16th.
Four women competed in the 3k event. Jordan Angers led the pack early and widened her lead as the race progressed. She finished with a time of 10:04.73, taking first by a margin of over 15 seconds ahead of teammate Claire Brown (10:19.95). Abby Seaberg (10:30.33) and Caroline Robelen (10:35.85) also competed taking fifth and seventh overall. A team of Maria Acosta, Helbling, Kendra Smither and Brooke Fazio competed in the 4x400 relay, taking second overall with a time of 3:44.76 which is a new program record.
Freshman Peter Borger was the only men's cross country member to compete in today's events, taking third in the men's 3k with a time of 8:51.75.
While the Fred Hardy Invitational may be over, the outdoor season is just beginning. The Spiders will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Williamsburg, Va. to compete in William & Mary's Colonial Relays April 4th-6th.
