ORLANDO, FL -- The Richmond Spider men's golf team battled rain and then wind en route to a team score of 317 (+29) in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Grand Cypress Golf Course on Friday.

Playing in the third flight, the Spiders teed off in the rain at 9:00 AM. Before Michael Baker, Richmond's final golfer, had a chance to finish the first hole, play was halted due to lightning in the area.

After a delay of nearly two hours, the Spiders returned to the course shortly before noon to complete their rounds in entirely different weather conditions. When play resumed, the rain clouds had been replaced by strong winds, and Richmond dealt with swirling breezes and gusts of more than 20 miles per hour for the reminder of the day.

Senior Ben Wanichek led the team with a six-over 78 and is tied for 29th in the field of 55. As a team, Richmond is 10th in the 11-team event. As a result, the Spiders will begin the second round at 7:30 AM on Saturday, going off in twosomes with Fordham, currently 11th.
