UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Spider sophomore Michael Baker has been selected to the Atlantic 10's All-Academic men's golf team, the conference announced Wednesday. Baker is the first Spider men's golfer to earn conference All-Academic honors since 2015, when David Germann was named to the team.
Baker appeared in all eight events for the Spiders this season and registered three top-20 finishes, the first of his collegiate career. His scoring average of 73.27 was the 12th best single-season mark in program history and an improvement of more than three strokes from his freshman campaign.
Baker finished tied for 17th at April's Atlantic 10 Championship, matching his best finish of the season. He also tied for 17th at the River Run Collegiate in September and tied for 19th at the Autotrader Collegiate in October, where he fired a career-low 68 (-4) in the second round.
Off the course, Baker has a 3.96 cumulative GPA and is majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance at Richmond's Robins School of Business. In April, he shared the Sophomore GPA Award at the athletic department's SPIDYs awards, given to the sophomore male and female student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.
Baker is just the second Spider men's golfer named to the A-10's All-Academic Team in the last nine years, joining David Germann, who was an All-Academic selection in 2014 and 2015. Baker was joined on the 2019 team by Davidson's Jack Lang, George Mason's Jeff Wilson, George Washington's Logan Lowe, and Rhode Island's Dawson Jones.
