RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond women's track and field student-athletes Maria Acosta (Maywood, N.J.) and Eryn Mills (Middletown, N.J) have been named to the All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
"Both Maria and Eryn had a great indoor and outdoor season for our program and university," Director of Track Lori Taylor said. "Their academic success combined with their athletic achievements are a great benchmark for those who follow. Qualifying for the NCAA Championships as individuals and leading inside the classroom as well as within the team are all part of who they are."
Acosta qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships after placing third in the 800-meter race at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships and placed second at the ECAC Championships. She posted a career-best time of 2:05.16 at the Colonial Relays (April 4), one of her two outdoor first place finishes in the distance.
"This makes the second consecutive year Maria has been honored," Taylor said. "She has set program records, won the ECAC Indoor 800M title, won Atlantic 10 Conference Championships relay titles and gained valued experience at the NCAA Championships. Her 800M performances during the indoor and outdoor seasons were impressive. We are looking forward to watching her continued development."
Mills qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships this season, running in the 3000-meter steeplechase. She placed 32nd overall and eighth in her heat with a time of 10:32.30. Earlier this season, she posted a personal-best time of 10:26.72, taking home second place in the 2019 Colonial Relays.
"Eryn found her event in the 3K steeplechase," Taylor added. "She had a wonderful career for our program, qualifying for the NCAA Championships East Preliminary round. These student-athletes are great examples on and off the track. They recognize the value of the quality education our university offers and have learned to balance athletics and academic achievements at the highest level within the NCAA."
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
