Fall Captains Volunteer at Reinhart Guest House
09/27/2019 | Spider Leadership
RICHMOND, Va. – Several Spider student-athletes had the opportunity to volunteer at the Reinhart Guest House near the Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital (BSMH) last Friday. The student-athletes took part in the Spiders Leader Initiative under the direction of Associate Athletic Director Lauren Wicklund, which is partnered with the Reinhart Guest House to continue to help families in need as well as provide community outreach.
Spider athletics and the Reinhart Guest House have created a partnership to create a value-added experience for student-athletes in the community. Over time, this partnership will help create a deeper impact and provide more chances for our student-athletes to continue to be a part of the community. The guests at Reinhart Guest House come from out of town and the Spider athletics department provides an instant connection and support to them as they go through a difficult process of having a loved-one in the hospital over an extended period of time.
The mission at BSMH is to extend the compassionate ministry of Jesus by improving the health and well-being of our communities and bring good help to those in need, especially people who are poor, dying and underserved. Since opening in June 2014, the Guest House has provided supportive and comfortable accommodations to more than 7,000 families traveling from 48 states. The Guest House mission effectively promotes health and wholeness in an environment that feels like home.
Captains and team leaders from Spider football, soccer and cross country took time out of their busy schedules last Friday to make lunch for those families currently residing in the Reinhart Guest House. The student-athletes challenged their culinary skills by making chicken fajitas with a side of rice and brownies for dessert. Through communication and teamwork, the student-athletes made a meal that was shared by the residents of the house.
