Men's Basketball Announces 2019-20 Schedule
09/04/2019 | General, Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders men's basketball team announced its 2019-20 regular season schedule on Wednesday. Richmond will play a minimum of nine games on national television and face at least five opponents who competed in last year's NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. During their non-conference schedule, the Spiders could face as many as five teams from major conferences, which would be the most by the program since 2015-16.
"We've created an ambitious schedule and I'm really pleased with the results." said head coach Chris Mooney. "We're going to face some excellent opponents during the non-conference portion of our schedule and that's exactly what we need to prepare us for what I think will be an extremely competitive Atlantic 10 season."
Every Spiders game is currently scheduled to be on national television or ESPN+, with broadcast details for the Holiday Hoops Fest in Washington, D.C. on December 22nd still to be determined.
Richmond will open its 2019-20 campaign on Friday, November 8th at the Robins Center against St. Francis (PA) of the Northeast Conference in the first meeting between the schools since 1981. The Spiders will play their first of at least four games against major conference opponents on November 14th when Vanderbilt of the Southeastern Conference and new head coach Jerry Stackhouse visit the Robins Center. Richmond has defeated a major conference opponent in 13 of Chris Mooney's 14 seasons with the Spiders.
Richmond will then host Cal State-Northridge on November 17th and McNeese State on November 22nd in the regional rounds of the 2019 Legends Classic. The Spiders four straight home games to open the season matches their longest season-opening homestand under Chris Mooney.
The Spiders will head to Brooklyn, N.Y. to participate in the Legends Classic during Thanksgiving Week. Richmond will face Wisconsin in the semifinals at Barclays Center on November 25th and then take on either Auburn or New Mexico on November 26th. Both games will be shown on ESPN networks.
Richmond will return to the Robins Center on November 30 to face Boston College in the third meeting between the schools in the last four seasons. The game will be broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
After playing five of their seven November games at home, the Spiders will be away from the Robins Center for four of their six games in December, a stretch that starts with a December 3rd date at Hampton, Richmond's first true road games of the season. The Spiders will host South Alabama on December 8th and take on Charleston on NBCSN on December 14th in their final home game of 2019.
Richmond will play at Old Dominion on December 18th and head to Washington, D.C. on December 22nd for a neutral-site game against Radford as part of the Holiday Hoops Fest at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.
The Spiders will wrap up their non-conference schedule in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on December 29th against Alabama. It will be Richmond's first game against the Crimson Tide since a Spider victory in the first round of the 2017 NIT.
Richmond will open its 19th Atlantic 10 season at home against Saint Joseph's on January 2nd followed by a January 5th game at Rhode Island. After a five-day break, the Spiders will host Saint Louis on January 11th before playing back-to-back road games on national television: January 14th at Davidson on ESPNU and January 18th at George Mason on NBCSN.
The Spiders next four games will all be in Richmond: at home against La Salle on January 22nd, Dayton on January 25th, and George Washington on February 1st and at VCU's Siegel Center on January 28th. The January 28th game, the first of the 2020 Lumber Liquidators Capital City Classic, will be nationally broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
Richmond will head north to face Fordham in Bronx, N.Y. on February 8th and La Salle in Philadelphia on February 12th before returning home to host VCU on February 15th on CBSSN in the final game of the Lumber Liquidators Capital City Classic.
George Mason will visit the Robins Center on February 19th before the Spiders head to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure on February 22nd on NBCSN.
Richmond will wrap up its conference schedule with a February 26th visit to George Washington, home games vs Massachusetts on February 29th and Davidson on March 3rd and a road game at Duquesne on March 6th.
The 2020 Atlantic 10 Championship will be played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 11th-15th. Richmond is still working on finalizing an exhibition game at the Robins Center prior to the start of the regular season. Additional information regarding that contest, television information, and game times will be released at a later date.
The 2019-20 Spiders feature All-Atlantic 10 juniors Grant Golden and Jacob Gilyard and will return 90 percent of their scoring from last season, the second-highest rate of any team in the Atlantic 10. For the 15th straight season, the team will be coached by Chris Mooney, the winningest coach in program history. Mooney enters the season with 250 total wins at Richmond and 124 Atlantic 10 victories, both of which rank fifth by a head coach in conference history.
