12/11/2020 | Spider Leadership
RICHMOND, Va. – The Spider Leadership Initiative conducted a Networking November program presented by CapTech last month in conjunction with the Spider Athletic Fund. The Networking November program gave current Spider student-athletes numerous opportunities to connect with alums from all different facets of life. The partnership between the Spider Leadership Initiative and CapTech continues to grow and broaden with this new Networking November program.
"Networking November was a big success," Senior Associate Athletics Director Lauren Wicklund said. "We were able to offer numerous networking opportunities to our student-athletes while connecting with alums throughout the country as we prepare our student-athletes for life after college. As we navigate this virtual space, it is important that we continue to create the best student-athlete experience possible and are grateful to so many alums for supporting this important initiative."
Over 20 former Spider student-athletes took part in the program and met with 275+ current Spider student-athletes in different virtual sessions throughout the month of November. The sessions allowed for great feedback and interaction is small settings for current student-athletes.
"The Networking November events were all so helpful," women's soccer student-athlete Olivia Tripodi said. "I was able to get an inside look at what it's like to work in my industries of interest in a small, intimate setting where I was able to ask questions. I'm grateful to have made connections with former UR student-athletes that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. I will definitely take advantage of these connections during my job search process and use their valuable advice."
Former alums took part in the process from various different industries in the professional landscape ranging from the financial segment, banking, sports, government, health care and marketing/communications to name a few. Some companies represented included Altria, NFLPA, HSBC, MAXIMUS, ESPN, Capital One, Northwest Mutual, Goldman Sachs, UBS, KPMG and United Healthcare. All alums were able give a glimpse into life after college and life after being a Richmond student-athlete.
"The Richmond Athletic Department continues to embody the true student athlete experience with the highlight on the student piece and preparing each for the next chapter after their playing career," Spider Athletics Hall of Famer and partner at KPMG Heather Rice said. "I am continually impressed by how polished and ambitious the student athletes are today. They want to excel in the classroom as much as they do outside of it."
