Richmond Drops Road Match At Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team ran into a hot Navy team that earned a 6-1 home win on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy improved to 9-3 on the season with the victory.

The Spiders started the match by losing the first two doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) fell 6-1 against Andrew Ton and Derrick Thompson.

Senior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and sophomore John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) lost to Reilly Wilson and Finn Garner, 6-1, to give Navy a 1-0 lead.

In the final doubles match, senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) were leading 5-3 against Greg Durham and Jack Dabek before the match went unfinished.

In singles, Thompson won in straight sets against Evans, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Gavin Segraves earned a straight-sets win against Lovitt, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Erwin gave the Spiders their lone point with an easy 6-2, 6-4 win against Wilson at No. 5 singles. Garner clinched the win for Navy with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-sets win against Walsh at No. 3 singles. Fernandez lost a tough first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) and fell in the second set 6-1 to Ton at No. 1 singles.

In the final singles match, freshman Ricky Bell (Rockville, Md.) battled but lost to Matthew Lee, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

Richmond will face two road matches next weekend at Furman on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. and at Wofford on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Noon.
