Spiders Post Record-Setting Team GPA
02/19/2020 | Men's Golf
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Earlier this month when Richmond Athletics held its Annual Scholar-Athlete Breakfast, several top honorees were no-shows. The men's golf team, which is as skilled in the classroom as it is on the greens, was instead playing in its first tournament of the spring in Mobile, Alabama, more than 800 miles southwest of the University of Richmond's campus. Â
While the Spiders were competing in the first round of the Mobile Sports Authority Collegiate, they were also being recognized as the winners of the Men's Academic Team Award, which goes to the men's team with the highest GPA over the past year. The Spiders have an unparalleled cumulative team grade-point average of 3.59, and during the recently completed fall semester, the team posted a combined GPA of 3.61. That matches the team's best GPA for a term dating back to 2011 and is also the highest semester GPA for any male sports team on record at the University of Richmond.Â
In addition to its team award, four individuals earned individual honors for their academic performance: juniors Michael Baker, Andrew McInerney, and Will Tamplin and sophomore Michael Childress.Â
The team finished tied for 11th in Mobile and will return to the course on March 14-15 for the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in Howley-in-the-Hills, Fla.
