RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond has cancelled all sport competitions, practices and championships, effective immediately, due to health and welfare concerns associated with COVID-19. The decision came after the NCAA cancelled all winter and spring championships earlier in the evening.
"During this unpredictable and difficult time, Spider Athletics has decided to cancel all sport activities in the best interest and welfare of our student-athletes, coaches and campus community," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "I know this is a great disappointment to our student-athletes and coaches, whose hard work and dedication is unparalleled, but we must preserve and protect the health and well-being of the entire campus community. As we take steps to confront the spread of COVID-19, I am grateful for the support of the entire Spider family."
The Atlantic 10 Conference, Southern Conference (men's lacrosse), Patriot League (women's golf) and Colonial Athletic Association (football) have already cancelled all spring sports.
