RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond received numerous accolades in the 2021 Best 386 Colleges book by the Princeton Review this August and the school's athletic facilities were ranked No. 7 in the country by the publication.
Joining the Spiders in the top 10 in the country for athletics facilities includes Auburn, Florida State, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Utah, Denison, Washington State, Kansas State and Air Force. Richmond was the only school in the state of Virginia ranked in the top 20 and the only school in the Atlantic 10 or Colonial Athletic Association in the rankings. These rankings are based on student rankings from the top 386 colleges and universities in the country.
Richmond's facilities are among the best in the country and the Spiders continually add to their collection of high-class facilities. This fall, the Queally Athletics Center will come on line as the new home of Spider men's and women's basketball. The state-of-the-art basketball practice facility is just one part of the project that also includes the renovation of historic Millhiser Gymnasium into the Student-Athlete Development Center. That facility will house the academic support services, the Spider Leadership Initiative and the basketball coaches' offices.
Last year, Richmond installed new artificial turf and a new track at Robins Stadium while also opening the men's and women's lacrosse offices at the stadium. The Blandford-Everett Student-Athlete Performance Center was completed in Robins Center and included a new football locker room (Neuhoff Football Locker Room), an all-sport weight room (Willis Strength & Conditioning Room), a sports medicine facility (Congdon Sports Medicine Center), nutrition station, equipment rooms and coaching staff locker room. Additionally, the men's lacrosse locker room as renovated on the West Side of Robins Stadium.
Richmond updated the home of Spider field hockey, Crenshaw Field, last fall with the opening of a support facility which houses a press box, team locker rooms and filming positions, along with enhanced landscaping for a new entrance to the facility. This marked the second-straight year updates have been done to the facility after new AstroTurf was installed the season prior. Spider soccer moved to the President's Field at River Road last season, playing a pristine natural grass surface with a new scoreboard, Spider-branded tents and windscreens
Last year, the Spiders completed construction of a brand-new indoor/outdoor practice facility and renovated clubhouse for the golf programs at Independence Golf Course. The amenities include three heated double indoor/outdoor hitting bays, the latest in virtual golf technology, an indoor nine-hole putting green, an outdoor practice green, locker rooms, offices, a lounge, a practice range, and a short-game area as well as a nine-hole par-3 short course and an 18-hole championship course.
All of these additions are on top of the Spiders' two crown jewels in Robins Stadium and the Robins Center. Robins Stadium is in its ninth season of existence and the 8,700-seat facility is still one of the finest in the area. The stadium is home to Spider football, track and field, men's and women's lacrosse.
Robins Center was originally built in 1972 but received a $17 million dollar renovation in 2013-14. The renovations to the main arena of the Robins Center included new state-of-the-art LED lighting, midnight blue painted ceiling, four 15 feet by 32 feet video boards, scoreboards, refurbished seats, new premium seating options, new terrace hospitality areas, a refinished/newly painted court and renovated restrooms.
