08/21/2020 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond men's lacrosse head coach Dan Chemotti announced the promotion of assistant coach John Hogan to the program's offensive coordinator. Hogan is part of Chemotti's coaching staff that includes associate head coach/defensive coordinator Paul Richards along with assistant coach Logan Greco.
"I am very excited to name John Hogan our offensive coordinator," Chemotti said. "He is deserving, ready, and more than capable. In a short period of time he has demonstrated a strong work ethic, high intelligence, and the ability to develop meaningful relationships with our players. All of which are prerequisites to being a successful coordinator. Our players and his fellow staff members are excited for him and have complete confidence in his leadership at that end of the field."
Hogan is in his second year with the program after spending two seasons at Penn State. He helped the Spiders' offense average 12.71 goals per game through the seven-game shortened season. Richmond ranked 18th in the country in shooting percentage at 33.5 percent last spring and the Spiders' man-up offense was 19th in the country.
Hogan helped freshman All-America Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) finished second in the NCAA Division I in scoring among rookies with 19 goals in seven games. Additionally, Connell led all players in the country in man-up goals last season, notching seven in seven games. Junior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) led the team in scoring with 30 points, notching 14 goals and dishing out 16 assists.
"I could not be more excited about this opportunity and am very grateful to Coach Chemotti for showing his trust in me," Hogan said. "The staff and players here at Richmond have been tremendous to me over the past year and I am ecstatic about the future, personally and as a team."
Hogan spent 2018 and 2019 as an assistant coach at Penn State, helping the Nittany Lions to a 16-2 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals in 2019. Penn State finished first in the nation in won-loss percentage (88.9) and was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Hogan worked closely with the Nittany Lion offense, face-off position and man-up offense during the year. He helped Penn State turn in the nation's top-scoring offense, averaging 17.94 goals per game – more than two goals better than any other team in the country. The Nittany Lion man-up offensive was also the top unit in the nation, converting on 61.3 percent of its attempts (38-of-62).
Hogan helped Penn State finish ninth in the nation in face-off won percentage at 58.4 (337-of-577). He worked with Gerard Arceri, helping him finish 15th in the nation at the spot, converting 278-of-456 (60.98%). Arceri was a Tewaaraton Award Nominee and was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Year while earning Third Team All-America accolades.
Hogan starred at Cornell in the Ivy League, earning four letters from 2012-15 – including the first two years when Richmond assistant coach Paul Richards was on the staff at Cornell. He finished his career playing in 53 games for the Big Red, scoring 47 goals and handing out 45 assists, good for 92 career points. He was a two-team All-Ivy League selection and led the Big Red to three consecutive Ivy League championships from 2013 to 2015. He scored 19 goals and added 21 assists as a senior while posting 17 goals and 23 assists as a junior. He was named the 2015 recipient of the J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award.
