Spider Leadership Initiative Announces Rising & Champion Rosters For 2020-21

RICHMOND, Va. – The Spider Leadership Initiative under the direction of Associate Athletic Director Lauren Wicklund is a unique program for the University of Richmond Athletics Department and works to encourage and grow Spider student-athletes into leaders on the campus and off the campus. Each year, Spider head coaches nominate student-athletes to play a bigger role in the Spider Leadership Initiative as either Rising Leaders or Champion Leaders.
"We are so excited to welcome our newest group of rising and champion leaders," Wicklund said. "We need strong leaders more than ever before and I look forward to watching this group grow and develop over the 2020-21 academic year and positively impact themselves, their teams, and the Richmond community."
Rising Leaders are underclassmen that coaches see as future leaders of their teams and who they want to develop now to create strong leadership throughout the program. The goal is to have leadership to run through all facets of the program from freshmen through seniors on the roster. The Rising Leader roster this season is comprised of 53 student-athletes from all 17 of the Spider varsity teams, ranging from one true freshman to junior class standing. Additionally, the Rising Leader roster contains 35 female student-athletes.
Champion Leaders are either team captains or, for teams that don't have captains are part of some sort of leadership council or team. The Champion Leader roster is also comprised of 53 student-athletes (30 female) from all 17 programs, with all of them being a junior class level or above.
