RICHMOND, Va. -- Sidelined from competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Richmond men's golf team excelled in the classroom last semester, posting the highest combined GPA for any Spiders team on record. The nine members of the team -- Lou Baker, Michael Baker, Alex Campbell, Michael Childress, Garrett Clark, Carter Cook, Ben Cooper, Andrew McInerney, and Will Tamplin -- registered a combined GPA of 3.80 on a 4.00 scale in the fall, believed to be the best ever for any Spiders varsity team in a regular-graded term. (Accommodations due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic were made for the spring 2020 semester.)
Two Spiders posted perfect term GPAs of 4.00 in the fall, and seven of the nine members of the team earned a spot on the Dean's List.Â
The Spiders have been recognized for their academic performance several times over the past year. Last February, the team won the Richmond Athletics Men's Academic Team Award, which goes to the men's team with the highest GPA over the past year. In July, Richmond was one of just 59 men's golf programs in Division I to receive Presidents Special Recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), an honor reserved for schools with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Senior Michael Baker currently has the highest cumulative GPA among all senior male student-athletes at UR, and teammate Lou Baker has the highest cumulative GPA among all second-year male student-athletes at Richmond.Â
The Spiders started spring semester classes on Tuesday.Â
