Ekert named Metropolitan Golf Association's Junior Player of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond freshmen Cole Ekert has been named the Metropolitan Golf Association's Junior Player of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday. Ekert, a Chatham, N.J. native, won medalist honors in a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, N.J. in June and also during stroke play qualifying for the Met Junior Championship at the Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. in July.

"To win an award like this, especially in my last chance to win it, it's certainly something I'll remember for the rest of my life," Ekert said to the MGA. "It's incredible. I'm happy to be joining a good list of players."

Ekert appeared in three events for the Spiders this fall, posting the third-lowest scoring average (73.89) on the team and collecting a top-20 finish at the River Run Collegiate in September, when he placed 15th in college debut.

The MGA will honor Ekert and his achievement during its 124th Annual Meeting & Dinner on Wednesday, December 1 at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y.
