04/10/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team gave up two first-half goals and tried to comeback in the second half but fell short 2-0 against VCU Saturday at President's Field at River Road.
Richmond (1-6-1) was outshot 18-7 in the game but had nine corner kick chances in the 2-0 loss. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) set a new career-high with nine saves in her final game as a Spider.
The Rams took an early lead in the seventh minute as Emma Kershner found Lyndsey Gutzmer who scored on a header past the keeper. Wigg kept the game close with a save in the ninth minute and another save in the 20th minute.
A minute later, a hand ball by VCU gave Richmond a penalty kick opportunity that senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) took and was stopped by VCU's keeper Grace Young in the 21st minute. Graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) had a shot in the 26th minute but it went wide. Walker had another chance on a breakaway but VCU's Young came out of her net to stop it from happening.
The Rams made it 2-0 after a cross inside the box found the leg of a Richmond defender and deflected into the net for an own goal. Wigg made three more saves to finish the half with five.
The Spiders controlled possession more in the second half but couldn't cut the lead. Alyssa Hendricks (Grimes, Iowa) had a chance that was saved by Grace Young in the 49th minute. In the 52nd minute, Walker took a shot that went over the net.
Wigg continued to keep the game close making three saves in a five-minute span starting in the 78th minute. The Spiders also had six corner kicks in the second half but couldn't create any shots from them.
UR had another chance in the closing minutes as Walker took a shot that went wide in the 84th minute.
Richmond completed their eight-game A-10 conference season and will return for the 2021 fall season.
