Baker Wins Second Straight A-10 Rookie of the Week Award
04/03/2021 | Men's Golf
RICHMOND, Va. -- Spiders sophomore golfer Lou Baker has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced on Saturday. Baker was honored for his runner-up finish at the Golden Horseshoe Collegiate on March 30 in Williamsburg, Va, the best individual result for a Spider men's golfer since the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship.Â
Playing the famed Gold Course at the Golden Horseshoe Club, Baker shot rounds of 69, 70, and 72 to finish at a 1-over 211, second-best in the field of 88. He recorded 13 birdies while leading Richmond to a fourth-place finish among the 16 teams at the event. Baker became the first Spider to win or finish runner-up at an event since Zack Justice and Andrew Sciarretta tied for second at the 2017 A-10 Championship.Â
This is the second straight Rookie of the Week Award for Baker, who was honored last Saturday for his 13th-place finish at the Ross Collegiate Classic in Southern Pines, N.C. earlier in March. With his results at that event and the Golden Horseshoe, Baker has now registered four top-20 finishes in his eight career full-field events at Richmond.Â
This is Baker's third A-10 Rookie of the Week Award. He won the first in September 2019 following a seventh-place finish at the River Run Collegiate in Davidson, N.C. The Atlantic 10 has ruled that due to the incomplete 2019-20 season, second-year players will retain their "rookie" eligibility for the spring 2021 season.Â
Baker and the Spiders are playing in the final round of the Irish Creek Collegiate Saturday in Kannapolis, N.C. It is their final event prior to the Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held at Reunion Resort & Golf Club at Orlando, Fla. on April 30 to May 2.Â
