Steve Taylor Earned 2021 MVP Sports Tourism Award

RICHMOND, Va. – Men's Cross Country head coach Steve Taylor was recently awarded the 2021 MVP Sports Tourism by Richmond Region Tourism for his contributions and service to tourism through the sport growth of cross country in the greater Richmond Region. Coach Taylor's efforts were recognized last week during the Visit Richmond virtual Annual Awards to celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week.
This award is given annually to an individual or organization who has made major contributions and/or has been of service to the growth of sports tourism in the Richmond Region.
Taylor has played a pivotal role in promoting and soliciting cross country events to come to the Richmond Region. He has designed the layout of the "Upper Course" at Pole Green Park, bringing with it many of the state's most prestigious high school events as well as the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in four of the last six seasons. In 2019, he helped bring the NIRCA National Cross Country Championships that attracted nearly 1,800 college students from across the nation. This fall, Pole Green Park will host the 2021 NJCAA D1 and D2 Cross Country National Championships, and the Half Marathon National Championships will start and finish in Henrico's Dorey Park.
He also helped secure the 2023 and 2024 USA Track & Field Cross Country Championships that will be held Pole Green Park in partnership with USA Track & Field Virginia, Richmond Region Tourism and the Collegiate Running Association. These championships will mark the first time in history the U.S. Championships will be held in Virginia, with the events occurring on Feb. 4 and Feb. 3 in their respective years.
