RICHMOND, Va. -- Spiders sophomore Lou Baker was named Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year by the conference on Friday. A panel of the league's 11 head coaches selected Baker in recognition of his performance during the 2021 season, when he finished in the top 15 in each of Richmond's four tournaments and posted the lowest stroke average by a Spider since 2017.Â
"I am truly honored to win Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year," said Baker. "Thank you to the A-10 for putting in the time to set up the conference championship. Thank you to Coach Decker for making me the best player I can be and for guiding our team through these crazy two years. Thank you to my teammates for being some of my best friends in the world and making me a better golfer and person. This award would not be possible without them. The biggest thanks goes out to my parents and sister. All three set examples for me that I live my life by. No words can describe how much I owe to them. Go Spiders!"
Baker finished his sophomore season by tying for 11th at the A-10 Championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla. earlier this month, matching the best showing by any Spider. It was his first conference tournament after the 2020 A-10 Championship was canceled due to COVID-19. It was also Baker's second straight 11th-place finish after he tied for 11th at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, N.C. in April.Â
At the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. in March, Baker shot a 1-over 211 over 54 holes and finished second in the field of 88, the best result for any Spider in a tournament since the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship. He started his spring season earlier in March with a 13th-place showing at the Ross Collegiate Classic in Southern Pines, N.C.
Baker joins Keegan Hoff as the only Spiders to win the A-10 Golfer of the Year Award. Hoff was honored in 2017, the first year the conference selected a Golfer of the Year to recognize a player for his performance over the entirety of the season.Â
