RICHMOND, Va. – At its annual meeting last week, the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) elected the University of Richmond's Matt McCollester as its new president. McCollester will serve as the organization's president for the next two years. VaSID exists to promote the accomplishments of the student-athletes of all Virginia institutions while supporting the state's sports information professionals. McCollester will begin his fourth year at the University of Richmond as the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications in 2021-22.
As president, McCollester will represent the organization at all functions where a VaSID representative is requested, write or assign articles intended to promote the organization, appoint committees to deal with organizational issues, oversee the All-State awards system, appoints coordinators for each sport and plans the organization's annual business meeting. His two-year term is renewable at the membership's discretion. VaSID is comprised of sports information or athletics communications professionals from intercollegiate institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership is open to any individual affiliated with one of the state's institutions at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, community college and independent levels, provided that individual's area of responsibility lies within the realm of sports information. Membership is also open to retired members of the profession.
McCollester is an active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and has been a member since 2003. He has served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee since 2004 and is the district coordinator for football and the at-large selections for District Three (Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee). In addition to these roles, he has been a member of the CoSIDA Job Seekers committee since 2012 and is currently in his third year as the Chair of the Job Seekers committee. He also works as part of the CoSIDA mentor-mentee program, helping young athletics communications professionals navigate their careers in sports information.
McCollester, a Pittsburgh native, oversees the Richmond Athletics Public Relations office, supervising a staff of five.
He also serves as the primary media relations contact for Spider Football and Spider Men's Lacrosse. McCollester owns over 23 years of experience in the media relations field with previous stops at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Ball State, Arkansas State and Harvard. He began his career as a student assistant at Slippery Rock.
