UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Spider cross country graduate Trey Burleson (Moseley, Va.) was presented with the William L. Lumpkin Track & Field Leadership Award, presented to a senior undergraduate member of the University of Richmond cross country/track & field team. The award is based on outstanding academic and athletic performance and citizenship.
The Lumpkin Leadership Award was established in 1997 in memory of former Spiders Coach Dr. William L. Lumpkin by University of Richmond alumni on the 1948-49 cross country team that Lumpkin coached.
Trey Burleson is an outstanding university leader and distance runner for the Spiders. The senior from Moseley, Virginia placed seventh in the 2020 IC4A Indoor Track & Field Mile Championships running 4:09.62 in the final. In the prelims, he ran 4:09.87 to qualify for the final. In 2019, qualified for the IC4A Indoor Championships in the mile and helped the Spiders Distance Medley Relay gain a qualifying mark to the championships. In the 2019 IC4A Indoor Championships mile prelim he ran 4:12.43 and as a freshman he ran his way onto the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie team during the cross country season. As a senior, he won his final two races. At the George Mason Invitational he won the second section of the 1500M running 3:54.91 and at the Virginia Challenge he won section 1 of the 1500M in 3:52.46.
He has served his coaches and teammates as team captain of the men's cross country team during his career. Additionally, while a member of the Spiders cross country team he helped earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors each of his four years extending the streak to 19 consecutive years the Spiders have received this designation.
"Trey joins an elite group of young men and women to receive this award," said head men's cross country coach Steve Taylor. "He has been a great competitor for the team and his achievements outside of athletics are outstanding. He maintained a very busy schedule and learned to balance his responsibilities as a student and athlete. His guidance of our younger team members has been an important component to our success. We wish him luck as he moves into a new chapter of his life."
