DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team is tied for 12th through the first two rounds of the River Run Collegiate, played Monday at River Run Country Club. The Spiders combined for a team score of 303 (+15) in Round 1 Monday morning and shot 300 (+12) in Round 2 Monday afternoon. At 603 (+27), Richmond is tied with Gardner-Webb for 12th in the 16-team field.Â
"We're trying to have a short term memory about today," said coach Adam Decker. "We can learn from today and use it to be better tomorrow."
The top Spider on the individual leaderboard is freshman Cole Ekert, who is competing as an individual.Â
Ekert, making his collegiate debut, birdied his opening hole in Round 1, the par-5 18th. It was the first of five birdies he made Monday morning en route to a 1-under 71. In Round 2, Ekert registered three birdies, five bogeys, and an eagle (on the par-5 2nd hole) en route to an even-par 72. At 143 (-1), Ekert is tied for seventh in the field of 84.Â
Sophomore Garrett Clark, who tied for third on the individual leaderboard in Richmond's season-opening win at the VCU Shootout last week, is tied for 21st at 148 (+4). Junior Ben Cooper is tied for 44th at 152 (+8) after shooting 76 (+4) in both rounds Monday. He's one stroke ahead of senior Carter Cook, who's tied for 52nd at 153 (+9).Â
