Spiders Drop Double Overtime Battle at Elon
10/01/2022 | Football
Graduate quarterback Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) was 42-58 with a season-high 383 yards while Jakob Herres (Easton, Pa.) led Richmond receivers with 12 receptions and a season-high 174 yards— his first 100-yard game as a Spider.
Defensively, Richmond held the Phoenix to 442 yards while its linebacker trio of Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.), Xavier Marshall (Charlotte, N.C.) and Philip O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) each accounted for six tackles.
The Spiders went three and out and were forced to punt on its opening possession before Elon quarterback Matthew McKay connected on a 74-yard pass to Bryson Daughtry on the Phoenix's first offensive play of the day.
Richmond immediately responded back when it marched down the field on a seven-play, 75-yard drive that ended in an eight-yard pass up the middle to Leroy Henley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) in the endzone.
Elon forced a fumble and recovered before scoring again in the first quarter, then Udinski scored his first rushing touchdown of the season when he scrambled in the pocket from the Elon eight yard-line to reach the endzone and make it a tied game at 14 apiece going into the half.
The Spiders took its first and only lead of the game when Jake Larson (Baltimore, Md.) connected on a 41-yard field goal to put the Spiders up 17-14 midway through the third quarter.
Richmond had a chance to put it away late in the fourth, but a turnover on downs at the 1:50 mark gave Elon the ball at its own five-yard line. The Phoenix then put together a 10-play drive down the field resulting in a 42-yard field goal to tie the game in its final seconds.
With time expiring, Udinski put together four-consecutive completions and Elon committed a 15-yard penalty to put the Spiders in field goal position as time winded down, but Elon got a hand on Larson's 42-yard attempt to force overtime with just four seconds left.
Like they did to open the game, the Phoenix scored on it's first play of overtime, but Richmond responded when Herres scored his first touchdown of the season off a 19-yard pass from Udinski on the following possession.
The second overtime saw the Spiders make it to kicking position where Larson knocked in a 47-yarder, but it wouldn't be enough as Elon ran in a touchdown three plays later to take home the 30-27 win and improve to 4-1 and 2-0 in CAA conference play.
Next up, the Spiders head into their bye week before hosting Villanova at home on Oct. 15.
