RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team is in 10th place through two rounds of NC State's Wolfpack Intercollegiate after compiling a team score of 593 (+17) Saturday at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Spiders combined for 122 pars in Rounds 1 & 2, the most of any team, but just 17 birdies, the fewest in the field. Sophomore Cole Ekert shot 73-72/145 (+1) to lead Richmond.Â
"I think it's just a course where every part of your game has to be precise," said Ekert. "There's a lot of trouble off the tee and the greens are very slopey and fast. I drove the ball very well overall and hit most of my iron and wedge shots onto the correct parts of greens. I didn't hole many putts, but I think avoiding three putts and keeping the ball in play was key to having a solid day."
Ekert is tied for 20th among the 84 competitors. His 29 pars Saturday were tied for the most of any player.
Grad student Michael Childress tied for 36th at 148 (+4) after shooting a pair of 74s. Freshman Drew Carlin is one shot back in a tie for 40th place at 149 (+5). Seniors Ben Cooper (tied for 49th at +7) and Lou Baker (tied for 66th at +10) are further back.
Competing as an individual, junior Garrett Clark shot 80-72/152 (+8) and is tied for 58th.Â
Sunday's final round will begin at 8:00 AM with players going off the 1st and 10th tees.Â
