RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond women's golf announced the members of its 2023 signing class Thursday, one day after prospective student-athletes enrolling in college in 2023 were first eligible to sign a National Letter of Intent. Maya Beasley from Pinehurst, N.C. and Heather Appelson from Wake Forest, N.C. signed NLIs with the program and will attend the University of Richmond next school year.
Beasley has led The O'Neal School to consecutive North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) state championships. She advanced to the Round of 64 at the 2022 US Girls' Junior Championship after winning her qualifying event by shooting 1-under par, three strokes clear of the field. Beasley placed 10th at the 2022 North and South Junior, shooting a 54-hole total of 215 (-1) at Pinehurst Golf Club. Beasley is a member of the National Honor Society who has raised over $5,000 for Support Connection, an organization that supports those diagnosed with breast cancer.Â
Appelson, captain of the golf team at Heritage High School, has been recognized Northern Athletic Conference VI Player of the Year. She won individual medalist honors at the 2021 PKB Girls Golf Tour Hampton Roads Classic at Ford's Colony in Williamsburg, Va., shooting 72-78/150 (+6). Appelson was the runner-up at the 2022 AJGA Three Little Birds Open, shooting 71-70-73/214 (-2) at the Piedmont Club in Haymarket, Va. She has also recorded top-five finishes at the 2021 Carolinas Junior Girls' PGA Championship (3rd), 17th Dogwood State Girls' Championship (4th), and 26th North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship. Appelson is a member of the National Honor Society and has served as a volunteer coach at First Tee for three years.
