Spider Athletics Hosts Senior Transitions Forum
11/11/2022 | Spider Leadership
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spider Leadership Development program under the guidance of Coordinator for Student-Athlete Success, R.D. Montgomery, held a Senior Transition Forum event for Spider senior student-athletes Friday in Spider Hall. The purpose of the event was to help prepare senior student-athletes for life after college and competition.
Student-athletes were provided lunch and listened to guest speakers share their experiences and expertise on how to best equip oneself for life after college athletics. Speakers included Andrew Young, Chief Financial Officer of Capital One and father of men's lacrosse senior, Dalton Young, Athletics Staff Psychologist Dr. Rachel Turk, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Olympic Sports Beacher Porter, former NBA PR professional and news anchor Pete Sousa and Hilary Phelps, a 2000 UR grad and decorated member of the women's swimming and diving team who currently owns and operates a creative agency.
Each speaker touched on key areas that will assure success for Spider student-athletes after graduation. The areas included building personal brands, leveraging experiences and balancing mental and physical health with real-world responsibilities to name a few.
"This event is important because it gives student-athletes new perspectives on what it's like to transition from being a college athlete to the real world," said Montgomery. "All of our student-athletes have the inherent skills to be successful and I think it's important to highlight that. It's so easy to get lost in the day-to-day minutiae that [student athletes] sometimes forget that they have a lot of the attributes that employers are looking for."
