Spiders Fall to Tribe in Capital Cup Battle
11/19/2022 | Football
The Spiders drove the field on their first two opening possessions after William & Mary was forced to punt, and while the Spiders put themselves within scoring distance, they were forced to settle for field goals.
"When you're down there, you gotta score [touchdowns]," said Jakob Herres (Easton, Pa.). "When you have an offense like us, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to put up points and we just didn't get the job done today."
The Tribe answered back with a touchdown at the 1:11 mark of the opening frame to make it 7-6, then Herres scored on a six-yard pass from Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) in the opening minutes of the second before a William & Mary field goal and touchdown towards the end of the frame gave the Tribe a lead they would hold on to for the rest of the afternoon.
Two more William & Mary touchdowns in the third made it 31-13 before Herres scored his second touchdown of the day off a five-yard pass from Udinski with 56 seconds to go in the third for his first multi-touchdown game as a Spider.
Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored on a six-yard rush at 10:42 in the fourth to make it 31-26. The Spiders then went for two but were unsuccessful. As Richmond looked to battle back in a one-score game late in the fourth, the Tribe tacked on another touchdown to keep Richmond out of reach.
Philip O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Spider defense with 10 tackles, but the Tribe run game proved to be too much as they ran for 244 yards and four scores.
Leroy Henley broke the 100 receiving yards mark for the fourth time this season with nine catches for 100 yards, while Herres added nine catches of his own for 82 yards. Udinski went 32-50 for 277 yards and was sacked a season-high five times in the contest.
"Obviously a lot of credit to William & Mary— they played really well," said head coach Russ Huesman. "It was tough for us... we had chances and I don't think we played our best football on either side of the ball."
The Spiders, who put together their best season since 2016, will now wait until tomorrow to find out their FCS playoffs fate.
