Spiders Fall to Sacramento State in Second Round of FCS Playoffs

Sacramento, Calif.— The University of Richmond football team's season came to a close Saturday after falling to Sacramento State, 38-31, in the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs. The Spiders end their season 9-4, while the second-seeded Hornets improve to 12-0.

Both teams traded points back-and-forth for the duration of the game, but it would be Sacramento State who put up the contest's final points to advance to the playoff quarterfinals.

The Hornets struck first, but from there the next three scores belonged to Richmond. Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) found Jasiah Williams (Petersburg, Va.) on a 25-yard pass to the endzone followed by a Savon Smith (Winchester, Va.) one-yard rushing touchdown in the first before a wide-open Leroy Henley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) caught a 24-yard pass from Udinski in the second.

The Hornets then answered back to the Spiders' 21 unanswered points with three scores of their own in two touchdowns and a field goal.

In the third, Andrew Lopez (New Orleans, La.) booted a 26-yard field goal, then Henley caught his second touchdown of the day, this time on a 21 yard catch from Udinski.

With the Spiders up 31-24 to start the fourth, the Big Sky Conference champions delivered Richmond its final blow with two touchdowns including one off a 51-yard pass.

Udinski went 21-for-39 and 216 yards in a steady rain that persisted all game, while Sacramento State's two quarterback system accounted for 400 passing yards.

Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied a career-high day rushing, carrying the ball 20 times for 109 yards.

The Richmond defense was led by redshirt-freshman Donovan Hoilette (West Palm Beach, Fla.) who filled in for an injured Philip O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) and racked up 11 tackles including two for loss (-4) and a pass breakup.

Tyrek Funderburk (Indian Trail, N.C.) picked up his second multi-interception game of the season, grabbing two out of the air while adding three tackles and a pass breakup.
