Richmond, Va. – University of Richmond punter Aaron Trusler (Melbourne, Australia) has been named a finalist for FCS Punter of the Year, as announced Monday.
Of the 30 punters nominated for the award in August, Trusler is one of 10 semifinalists to be chosen by the FCS Punter of the Year Committee.
The Augusta Sports Council, also home to the Ray Guy Award (awarded to the best collegiate punter in the FBS), created the FCS Punter of the Year Award in 2019 to honor the best collegiate punter playing in the FCS. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
Trusler helped the Spiders lead the CAA in net punting with 39.6 yards per punt. This season, he was responsible for 2,108 yards including a career-long 63-yard kick against Davidson in the FCS Playoffs.
He averaged over 40 yards a punt in 10 of the 13 games this season and of his 51 attempts, 19 stuck inside the 20.
Richmond's punt return defense also shined under Trusler, ranking fourth in the CAA and 11th overall with 2.75 average yards on returns. The 22 yards opponents were able to pick up on punt returns is the sixth-lowest in the country.
The FCS Punter of the Year Award winner will be voted on by the FCS Punter of the Year Award/Ray Guy Award Committee and will be announced on Dec. 13.
