Spider Athletics Celebrates Black History Month

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond athletics department will celebrate Black History Month in February with events surrounding the Atlantic 10 Conference's unifying theme of Black Health and Wellness.
The month's activities will kick off on February 2nd with Wellness Wednesday for all student-athletes, coaches and staff. Resources will be made available regarding self-care and health and wellness specific to Black health and wellness with Spider Athletics staff psychologist Dr. Rachel Turk.
The Spiders will hold a Coaches' Round Table Discussion for head coaches and assistant coaches on February 7th. Dr. Morgan Russell, Senior Associate Director for the University's Student Center for Equity and Inclusion and Dr. Turk will facilitate a dialogue regarding students of color at University of Richmond, identifying micro-aggressions, reframing language and a review of active and empathic listening.
Former Spider women's basketball student-athlete, Jaide Hinds-Clarke, who now serves as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Leadership Development and Engagement, will host the Spider Alumni Spotlight Series for Black History Month for the second consecutive year. Hinds-Clarke will hold discussions with four Black former Spider student-athletes throughout the month. These discussions will be available on www.richmondspiders.com and Spider Athletics social media channels.
In collaboration with the Deans Offices of Richmond and Westhampton Colleges, the Spiders will conduct a Mosaics event for all student-athletes in the Robins Center on February 17th. Dean Joe Boehman of Richmond College and Dean Mia Reinoso Genoni of Westhampton College will facilitate a Privilege Line activity with all Spider student-athletes.
Additionally, the Spiders will hold a BareSOUL Yoga and Wellness session with all student-athletes during February. BareSOUL Yoga is rooted in love, self-care and connection and utilizes yoga principles to create space for healing that centers the Black community and welcomes the whole community.
The Spider Athletics Black History Month celebrations will culminate with the A-10's Social Justice and Inclusion game with the women's basketball contest against Fordham at the Robins Center on February 23rd. The Social Justice and Inclusion game is part of the Atlantic 10's Commission on Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. An expo focusing on Black Health and Wellness will be held in conjunction with the game.
