Spiders Medal Three Times at Day One of Championships

Fairfax, Va.— The University of Richmond track & field program earned three trips to the podium at day one of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by George Mason.
Elizabeth Stockman took home the first medal for the Spiders when she clocked a 16:58.46 for bronze. The freshman ran a discliplined race before kicking on the final lap to earn the first indoor championships medal of her career.
Just after Stockman's performance in the 5,000, the Richmond DMR squad of Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Kendra Smither (Richmond, Va.), Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.) and Kayla O'Connell (Marshfield, Mass.) won gold after a convincing 11:46.327 victory.
Finally to end the night, Kayla Woods (Wilmington, Del.) advanced to the finals in the long jump with a 19-5.25 marking and was not passed in finals as she repeated as an A-10 champion and won another gold medal for the Spiders.
Earlier in the competition, nine Spiders punched tickets to the finals with their preliminary markings. Kamryn Ross (Richmond, Va.), heads into finals as the top seed after running a 8.54 in 60m hurdles prelims. Rachel Helbling (McDonald, Pa.) enters finals as the No. 2 seed after a 56.49 showing in the 400m dash prelims. Helbling will also be looking to medal in the 500m as she enters finals with the third-best prelims time of 1:15.57, followed by Virginia Beringer (Fredericksburg, Va.) who followed with a 1:17.02 for eighth.
Before winning the DMR, Brooke Fazio (1st, 2:13.48) and Kate McAndrew (2nd, 2:13.62) finished prelims with the times to beat in tomorrow's finals. As for the other half of the DMR contingency, O'Connell ran the fastest prelim time in the 1,000 with a 2:55.77 and Smither ran the fourth-fastest with a 2:56.29. Isabel Blaylock (Dallas, Tex.) rounded out Spiders headed to finals after finishing second in her heat with a 2:58.52.
