ZION CROSSROADS, Va. – VCU retained the Black & Blue Cup Friday at Spring Creek Golf Club, defeating the Richmond Spiders 6-2 in the annual match play event.
Senior Carter Cook provided the Spiders their only full point of the match, defeating VCU's Clifford Foster 3 & 2.
"I tried to focus on hitting as many greens as possible and to minimize my mistakes," said Cook. "I wanted to force my opponent to have beat me and I didn't want to hand him any holes."
Two other Spiders halved their matches, with sophomore Garrett Clark and junior Ben Cooper each earning half a point. With the match tied entering the par-5 18th hole, Cooper and VCU's Sachin Kumar both hit their second shots to 12 feet and two-putted for birdie, providing a thrilling conclusion to a well-played match.
Senior Michael Childress hit the shot of the day on the 13th hole, a 166-yard par 3. Childress' 8 iron rolled into the bottom of the cup for his third career hole in one and his first in competition.
VCU has now won the Black & Blue Cup six times, compared to three victories for Richmond since the event was first introduced in 2012.
