Richmond, Va.— Richmond Spiders pride was on full display this weekend at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K and Collegiate Running Association National Championship.
Founded by Richmond head men's cross country coach Steve Taylor and associate track and field head coach Jon Molz in 2013, The CRA runs its national championship 10k road race as part of the event and awards NCAA-sanctioned cash prizes to the top three male and female finishers who currently are enrolled in at least one college class.
UR senior Peter Borger took second in the race with a time of 30:21 in his second 10K in as many days. He finished fifth in the long run at the UVA Challenge the day before.
Borger wasn't the only Spider to find success at Saturday's CRA National Championship 10K. Six of the top 10 finishers on the men's side and five of the top 10 for the women are Richmond students and were/are members of the Spiders cross country/track & field program.
"All my teammates were here so it felt really good to warm up and get on the line with them for the last time this season," said Borger.
In the women's race, UR law student and former cross country member, Ave Grosenheider, finished fifth (38:22), senior and first-year track & field student-athlete,Taylor Coleman, finished sixth (38:51), sophomore Manon Stephen finished seventh (39:07), junior Anna George finished eighth (39:55) and senior Kathryn Shea finished ninth (40:53).
"It was really exciting," said Shea after running her first-ever 10K. "There was so much energy and I was really happy throughout. I was tired and hurting, but it was all good an overall great race."
For the men, after Borger came sophomore Jordan Benura finishing fourth (31:43), seniors Jimmy Quinn (32:03), Robert Gunia (32:23) and Noah Campbell (32:26) went 5-7 and Tanner Crochet finished 10th (32:52).
Nearly 18,000 participants and nearly 1,000 college students cruised the streets of Richmond for the event— the first to return to its original format since 2019.
