Richmond Athletics Hosts First In Millhiser Dialogue Series
05/06/2022 | General, Spider Athletic Fund
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Athletics Department held the inaugural Millhiser Dialogue on April 29th before an audience of Richmond coaches, faculty, and staff. The initial session in this series was entitled "Title IX at 50 Years: Spider Reflections with Ginny Doyle, LaRee Sugg, and Jeanine Radice."
The Millhiser Dialogue Series will be an ongoing series of moderated discussions amongst members of the campus community, focusing upon issues at the intersection of sport and society. The dialogues are designed to educate and promote discussion around important issues that have impacted, and continue to impact our world.
"It is so important that we, as a community, reflect on how Title IX legislation impacted the trajectory of the lives of women in America," Deputy Athletics Director and Chief of Diversity Equity and Inclusion LaRee Sugg said. "It legally affirmed and safeguarded the right for women to have equal access to educational opportunities, including participation in athletics. For Ginny, Jeanine and I, the opportunities to compete in the sports we love and build fulfilling professional careers within intercollegiate athletics would not have been possible without Title IX, and the people who dreamed, worked, fought for its passage."
The discussion looked back on the impact of Title IX at 50 years. From Ginny Doyle's iconic 1992 free-throw triumph over Billy Packer to remembrances from athletic staff members LaRee Sugg and Jeanine Radice, the session traced the arc of Title IX through its impact upon their lives to today's student-athletes.
"Seeing video of Ginny Doyle, who we lost in 2014, and listening to LaRee and Jeanine reminisce about their athletic journeys was inspiring. One could not leave the session without an even greater respect for them and all women who compete at the intercollegiate level," moderator and Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support & Student Services Bruce Matthews said.
Panelists and attendees engaged in interactive dialogue regarding their experiences and the impacts of Title IX. The discussion proved thought-provoking and allowed for various view points on how Title IX has transformed intercollegiate athletics over the past 50 years.
"It was a very informative, timely and authentic discussion. Title IX has had a profoundly positive impact on the lives of so many Spider student-athletes over the years," Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt said. "I'm sure that the coaches, faculty, staff & administrators in attendance enjoyed the insightful perspectives and comments provided by the panelists."
