Woods Wins Silver, Six Spiders Advance After Day One of Championships

Richmond, Va.— The University of Richmond track & field team broke onto the scene at day one of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a silver-medal performance by Kayla Woods and a slew of qualifying marks ahead of tomorrow's finals.
Woods earned Richmond's first medal of the championships when she leaped to 19-11.50 on her first attempt and didn't look back as she sailed to a runner-up finish.
Kamryn Ross finished second in heat two of the 100m hurdles prelims with a 14.25 to automatically qualify for tomorrow's final. In the 400m dash prelims, reigning indoor and outdoor champion, Rachel Helbling, cruised to a win in heat one with a season-best 54.40 to return for tomorrow's championship race.
Tamar Accius finished first in heat two of the 100m dash prelims with am 11.89 for a berth to tomorrow's final. In the 200m dash, she advanced on time, running a 24.87 for second in heat four.
Three Spiders (the most of any team) will toe the line for tomorrow's 800m finals. Brooke Fazio (2:10.19), Kendra Smither (2:13.47) and Kate McAndrew (2:16.96) each won their heats to automatically qualify.
In just her second-ever collegiate race, Taylor Coleman ran a 37:33.79 for 10th place in the 10,000m run.
The Spiders are back at Sports Backers Stadium for finals tomorrow.
