RICHMOND, Va. -- The Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) has announced that four members of the Richmond Spiders men's golf team have been named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for the 2021-22 season. Lou Baker, Michael Childress, Garrett Clark, and Ben Cooper earned the distinction, which is reserved for student-athletes who played in at least 50 percent of a team's competitive rounds during the season, posted a stroke average under 76.0, maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, and displayed high moral character. Freshmen are not eligible.
This is the second straight year four or more Spiders have been named All-America Scholars, after a school-record six golfers were named All-America Scholars in 2021. Prior to 2021, no more than three Richmond golfers had been named All-America Scholars in the same season. Across Division I, only 10 teams had more All-America Scholars than Richmond in 2022: Delaware, JMU, Mercer, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rhode Island, Toledo, and UNC Greensboro.
Childress is the first player in program history to earn All-America Scholar honors three times, while this is the second All-America Scholar distinction for both Baker and Cooper. This is the first time Clark has been named an All-America Scholar. He is the 17th different golfer in program history to be named to the All-America Scholar Team.
