Spiders record fifth-lowest score in program history in Round 2 of VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. -- Spiders sophomore Cole Ekert registered a pair of eagles Monday afternoon to help Richmond to a team score of 11-under par (277) in Round 2 of the of the VCU Shootout at the Creek Course of the Country Club of Virginia, the fifth-lowest 18-hole score in program history. Ekert eagled the par-5 hole 12 and the par-5 hole 18 en route to a 68 (-4) in the second round, the lowest score of his collegiate career.Â
Seniors Lou Baker and Ben Cooper both shot 69 (-3) in Round 2, while graduate student Michael Childress carded a 71 (-1) to provide UR's final team score. The team's 11-under par trails only a 15-under at the 2017 A-10 Championship, a 12-under at Skybrook during the 2003-04 season, and a pair of 12-unders in this event in 2019 (Round 2) and 2021 (Round 1) among all single-round scores in program history. Richmond's 277 (-11) in Round 2 was an eight-shot improvement from its Round 1 score and moved the Spiders up to 10th on the team leaderboard at 14-under par (562).Â
Through 36 holes, Ekert is tied for 13th in the field of 75 at 6-under par (138). Cooper is also in the top 20 at 139 (tied for 19th). Childress is tied for 43rd at 1-under while junior Garrett Clark is in 55th place at 1-over par and Baker is tied for 56th at 2-over.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM. Richmond will tee off on holes 12-15.Â
