01/09/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond, Va. – University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Dan Chemotti announced a 13-game schedule for the 2023 season Monday. This year's schedule features matchups against top-ranked opponents, old foes, and new competition as the Spiders embark on the inaugural Atlantic 10 men's lacrosse season.
The program's 10th-aniversary season kicks off Feb. 4 when the Spiders travel to Maryland to face the defending national champion Terrapins. The game marks the first time in program history the Spiders open the season against the defending national champion.
Richmond's home slate of games begins on Feb. 18 when the Spiders host Bucknell before welcoming Towson Feb. 24 and Fairfield Feb. 26. The Spiders are 6-0 against these opponents, having won two contests against each team.
The Spiders will look for another thrilling win over the Cavaliers when they travel to Charlottesville to play Virginia March 4. Last year, the Spiders defeated then-No. 2 UVA, 17-13 at home, in one of the program's greatest victories to-date.
March 7 brings in Mercer, who the Spiders are no stranger to having played against the Bears as former members of the Southern Conference.
The Spiders then face a three-game road swing when they finish the nonconference schedule with trips to Georgetown March 11 and St. John's March 25. The Spiders will meet Georgetown for the second time in program history, while the game against St. John's comes as the first meeting between the teams.
Richmond then opens play in the new A-10 men's lacrosse conference with a visit to 2022 Northeast Conference Champions Saint Joseph's April 1. The next two games are home, welcoming UMass April 8 and High Point April 15. UMass joins the A-10 from the Colonial Athletic Association, while High Point follows Richmond from the Southern Conference.
Richmond then travels to New York's Finger Lakes region April 22 to play Hobart for the first time. Like Saint Joseph's, the Statesmen make the move to the A-10 from the NEC.
Finally, the Spiders cap off the regular season when St. Bonaventure makes the trip to Robins Stadium April 29.
The Spiders will host the inaugural Atlantic 10 Championship that begins with semifinal games on May 4 followed by the championship game on Saturday, May 6.
In the past decade, the Spiders have seen unprecedented success for such a young program, recording 83 victories including eight conference title appearances while winning four. The team has made it to the NCAA tournament four times, most recently reaching the first round in 2022 after an 9-3 regular season capped by a SoCon championship title. The 2023 squad returns five 2022 All-SoCon selections as the team kicks off the next decade of success as members of the new Atlantic 10 men's lacrosse conference.
