Richmond, Va. — As a part of the University of Richmond's homecoming celebration, the 2008 national championship team will be honored during Saturday's game against Campbell.
On the way to their first title, the unseeded Spiders beat the second, third and fourth seeds in the Division I FCS Playoffs to win the first and only national championship by a University of Richmond team. The 2008 team, with current Head Coach Russ Huesman as the defensive coordinator, won its final nine games of the season and took down Montana, 24-7, in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Dec. 19, 2008 to earn the title. The team, led by 2023 Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Lawrence Sidbury, will be recognized on the field during the first media timeout of the second quarter of Saturday's Coastal Athletic Association matchup.
