Student-Athletes of Color Alliance Launches 2023-24 Programming

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond's Student-Athletes of Color Alliance (SACA) recently kicked off its programming for the 2023-24 school year with a Welcome Back event and a tailgate at the Spiders Football game vs Hampton.
The organization, which is open to all student-athletes, aims to support Spiders who identify as multicultural, Black/African-American, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, and multi-racial in a variety of ways.
Logan Anderson, SACA's PR and Social Media Director, said the organization is focusing its efforts in three areas in 2023-24: Community Building, Community Outreach and Service, and Professional and Career Development. "Last year was about building a foundation for our organization, and we're so excited to take what we've built and turn it around to serve all of our communities," said Anderson.
To help accomplish its mission, SACA has partnered with the University of Richmond's Student Center for Equity and Inclusion, uniting two campus organizations with similar aims. "A part of our mission is to provide spaces for underrepresented students to build community with each other, and our student-athletes of color fall within that category," said Dr. Morgan Russell-Stokes, Dean for Student Equity and Inclusion. "The SCEI creates programs and initiatives that specifically support multicultural students and we hope that by strengthening our partnership with SACA they can attend our existing programs that have benefited multicultural students for years. "
Many students attended Saturday's tailgate prior to Spider Football's matchup vs Hampton. Members were then able to watch the game from a hospitality tent in the north end zone while spending time with fellow student-athletes of color.
The pair of kickoff events is only part of what SACA has planned for the upcoming school year. "We're looking forward to the possibility of partnering with local schools, having guest speakers, and staging another successful 'Family Feud' night in the spring," said Anderson. "We plan to have a service opportunity this month and next month, with our final event of 2023 being a zoom call with Dallas Mavericks Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Tray Thompson."
Anderson is joined on SACA's Executive Board by Co-President Quentin Southall (Men's Basketball), Co-President Fonnae Webb (Football), Vice President Jojo McShane (Soccer), and Engagement Chair for Women of Color Maddy Sesay (Women's Lacrosse).
