Richmond, Va. — University of Richmond true freshman quarterback Camden Coleman has been named the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman Player of the Week as well as CAA Football's Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday.
Coleman earns the honor after helping the Spiders take down Maine, 42-31, in his first career start Saturday. Coleman was 25-of-36 for 365 yards and six touchdown passes, tying the record for most in a single game in program history, a mark Kyle Lauletta set Sept. 16, 2017 against Howard. He threw for 313 yards in the first half and his six touchdown passes are tied for the most by any FCS player this season.
Coleman found Nick DeGennaro on three scores to help him tie the program record for most touchdown receptions in a game, last done over a decade ago on Oct. 20, 2012 when Kevin Finney caught three against James Madison.
Coleman is the first freshman in program history to throw for five touchdowns in a game, is the fifth different player in program history to throw for five or more touchdowns in a game (Kyle Lauletta, Reece Udinski, Michael Strauss, Greg Lilly) and is the second player in program history to throw for five or more touchdowns in a half (Kyle Lauletta, first half vs Howard on 9/16/17).
His efforts helped the Spiders put together their highest offensive effort of the season with 487 total yards.
This weekly awards come as the first for Coleman and first for the Spiders this season.
Up next, Coleman and the Spiders travel to Rhode Island Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 1:00.
