02/24/2023 | General
Richmond, Va. — The University of Richmond Department of Athletics hosted the first Scholar Athlete Breakfast since 2020 on Monday, Feb. 20, at the Alice Haynes Room in the Tyler Haynes Commons.
This year's breakfast saw 108 student-athletes honored for achieving a 3.5 or above GPA and recognized the top scholars from each respective school of study. The event also honored University of Richmond Provost Jeff Legro for his distinguished service to Spider Athletics.
Swimming and diving continued its dominance in the classroom, taking home this year's women's academic team award. The Spiders swim and dive program earned the country's second-highest GPA among women's swimming and diving teams, achieving a 3.82. The feat comes as the team's fifth-consecutive year above a 3.65 with nine Spiders earning a 4.0 and the whole team coming in above the 3.0 mark.
On the men's side, golf was named the top academic team, taking home the award for the fourth-straight year.
Fifth-year senior men's golfer Michael Childress was named the top scholar from the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, swimmer Mattie Williams earned the top scholar honor from the School of Arts & Sciences and senior women's lacrosse player Arden Tierney was named the top scholar from the Robins School of Business.
Senior swimmer Claire O'Shaughnessy was the morning's big winner, earning Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Richmond student-athletes continue to excel at the classroom and at an elevated pace. The last time a Scholar Athlete Breakfast was held (Feb. 2020), 66 student-athletes were honored— three years later, and that number is nearly doubled.
