02/24/2023 | Men's Golf
RICHMOND, Va. — Spiders sophomore Cole Ekert has been named the Atlantic 10 Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Friday. Ekert tied for second among 90 golfers at this week's Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., finishing the event at 2-under par (214). This is Ekert's first A-10 Golfer of the Week Award. He was named A-10 Rookie of the Week three times during the 2021-22 school year.
The runner-up finish was the best result of Ekert's collegiate career and the best finish for any Spider in a tournament since Lou Baker placed second at the 2021 Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. Ekert recorded 15 birdies during the event, two more than any other golfer in the field. As a team, the Spiders tied for third in the event, recording a 54-hole team score of 886 (+22).
Ekert and the Spiders return to competition in two weeks during Richmond's Spring Break, when UR competes in the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala. (March 5-7) and the Sea Palms Invitational in St. Simons Island, Ga. (March 9-11).
