Spiders Medal Twice and Make History at Day 1 of Championships

Kingston, R.I. -Â The University of Richmond track & field program earned two trips to the podium at day one of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Rhode Island. Strong performances led to many personal bests being broken and history changing in favor of the Spiders.
Madison Trippett grabbed the first medal for Richmond on the day as she took a third-place finish in the 5k with a time of 16:48.97 (missing her personal best by .07 of a second). Bringing home the Bronze, Trippett fought hard in the last leg of the event to secure the spot on the podium for Richmond.Â
Just after Trippett's finish in the 5k, the Richmond DMR squad of Kyra Keurentjes, Virginia Beringer, Caroline Donohoe and Elizabeth Stockman broke into the history books. With a time of 11:34.35, the Spiders not only finished in first to take the gold, they broke the facility, school and meet record for the event. The previous meet and facility record of 11:35.23 was set for nine years as Duquesne placed it in 2014.Â
Earlier in the competition, nine Spiders punched tickets to the finals with their marks in the preliminaries. Kamryn Ross heads into the finals as the fourth seed after running 8.63 in the 60m hurdles. Nina Lavelle enters the finals as the seventh seed after setting a new personal best of 58.49 in the 400m dash. Virginia Beringer heads into the finals as the third seed in the 500m as she took a time of 1:16.47 in the event.Â
The Spiders dominated the 800m prelims as three Spiders finished within the top five and will move onto the finals. Kyra Keurentjes, heading into the finals as the number one seed, finished with a mark of 2:12.87. Caroline Donohoe set a new personal best with her second-place finish with a time of 2:14.47. Lindsay Colflesh will be seeded in the fourth-place spot in the finals as she finished at 2:15.01.Â
The 1k was also a big success for Richmond as three Spiders make their way to the finals. Kate McAndrew goes into the finals as the second seed, finishing the prelims at 2:52.14. Dylan Miller will be the fifth seed going into the finals as she took the 2:57.33 mark. Kayla O'Connell pushed her way to a spot in the finals at the sixth seed with a time of 2:58.51.Â
Competition will continue tomorrow at the Mackal Field House as Richmond will continue to fight for more podium visits.Â
