Men’s Tennis Picked Third in A-10 Preseason Poll; Kliebhan and Walsh named Preseason All-Conference

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Richmond Men's Tennis team was picked to finish third in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, announced by the league office Wednesday.
Defending A-10 champion VCU was picked first in the poll, with 100 points and 10 first-place votes while Dayton was selected second with 88 points and the Spiders followed with 79 points. Davidson (67) and George Mason (45) rounded out the top five teams, while Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis are tied for sixth with 43 points each. Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and Fordham closed out the poll with 42, 23 and 20 points, respectively.
In addition to the poll, junior Daniel Kliebhan and graduate John Walsh were named to the 2023 Preseason All-Conference team.
Kliebhan, a native of Newton, Pa., finished his sophomore campaign with a singles record of 4-9 with every match played at singles No. 1. He went 3-2 in singles matches against A-10 opponents, picking up wins over Fordham (3-2, 6-2, 7-6(5)), George Mason (4-6, 6-2, 7-5) and Davidson (6-1, 6-4). Kliebhan partnered with Josh Keitelman for 12 doubles matches, finishing with a record of 5-6 with one match going unfinished. In addition, he competed in three doubles matches with John Walsh posting a record of 1-2 and played one doubles match with Alaister Burke, defeating a duo from St. Bonaventure 6-1.
Walsh, a native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., led the team with a singles record of 10-8 in the regular season, including going 7-1 at No. 2 singles during his senior season. He went 3-1 in singles matches against A-10 opponents, picking up wins over Fordham (7-6, 2-6, 10-4), George Mason (6-3, 7-5) and St. Bonaventure (6-3, 6-4). Walsh also finished the regular season with a win in each of his last five completed matches and posted a record of 12-4 in doubles matches with Campbell Erwin, including going 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. He had a record of 3-1 in doubles matches against A-10 opponents with Erwin, defeating duos from Saint Joseph's (6-3), Fordham (7-3) and St. Bonaventure (6-1) and played three doubles matches with Kliebhan, going 1-2.
