Spiders Battle in 1st Round of Low Country Intercollegiate
03/17/2023 | Women's Golf
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour coupled with bouncy new greens made for a challenging environment in the opening round of the Low Country Intercollegiate at the Moss Creek Golf Club Friday. The Richmond Spiders Women's Golf team scratched out a team score of 40-over par (328), good for 12th place on the 19-team leaderboard at the end of the Round 1.
Despite shooting her highest round of the season, a 6-over par 78, Rory Weinfurther led all Spiders Friday and finds herself tied for ninth place among the field of 105 golfers entering Round 2. Weinfurther birdied the 5th and 16th holes to help offset eight bogeys. Muskan Uppal — tied for 39th at 10-over par — was the only other Spider to record multiple birdies (also two) in Round 1.
Lauren Jones is also tied for 39th after shooting 10-over (82) in the first round. Vicky Zhu is four shots further back in a tied for 78th at 14-over par (86). Hannah Lydic is tied for 86th at 16-over (88).
Playing as an individual, Olivia Wilkie managed to make 11 pars, tied for sixth most in the field, on her way to a 7-over par 79. She is currently tied for 13th place.
The Spiders will begin play in Round 2 Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
