Spiders Stay Put on Second Day at Cutter Creek
04/01/2023 | Men's Golf
SNOW HILL, N.C. — With steady winds of 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 45 mph, the Richmond Spiders Men's Golf team succeeded in a particularly difficult task Saturday in Round 2 of the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate: they stayed in place. Richmond finished the day in sixth on the leaderboard at 25-over par, inching down from the tie for fifth the Spiders found themselves after Round 1.
The field of 10 teams and 78 golfers battled wind, scattered rain, and even lightning — resulting in a brief delay — throughout the round. Saturday's average round of 78.6 was an increase of more than two-and-a-half shots from Friday's Round 1. Spiders Cole Ekert and Ben Cooper bucked the trend, firing 1-over 73s Saturday after they each shot 76 (+4) in Round 1. The duo moved 28 spots up the leaderboard, finishing the day as part of a group of eight golfers tied for 10th at 149 (+5). Teammate Lou Baker, competing as an individual in the event, is also tied for 10th after rounds of 74 and 75.
Patrick Isztwan is three shots further down the leaderboard at 152 (+8), tied for 29th in the field. He's played the par 5s at Cutter Creek Golf Club in 2-under par through 36 holes, one stroke off the best mark of any golfer.
MIchael Childress is tied for 36th at 154 (+10), one shot in front of Drew Carlin, who is tied for 44th. Garrett Clark is tied for 65th at 161 (+17).
Alex Campbell, competing as an individual, is in 76th place at 174 (+30).
Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.
