Madison Trippett Wins Collegiate Road Mile National Championship

Madison Trippett, who recently secured victories at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and ECAC Championship in the 1500M, faced a deep field of competitors that included multiple All-American performers. Trippett unleashed a powerful surge in the final 150 meters, overtaking her rivals Lauren Berman and Susanna Sullivan, a member of the 2023 USA World Championship team. Trippett claimed the well-deserved title of the 2023 Collegiate Road Mile National Champion.
Jordan Bendura, fresh off a runner-up finish in the Collegiate Trail Running Championship, showcased his versatility by competing in the men's collegiate national championships and securing an impressive 6th place finish.
The event garnered significant attention, attracting a record-breaking 517 runners who tackled the picturesque streets of Old Town Winchester. The point-to-point race course provided a challenging opportunity for participants to test their skills at the Mile distance, further enhanced by favorable race day temperatures of 60 degrees.
In the women's 1-mile race, a fiercely competitive field emerged, with Madison Trippett leading the charge alongside Bethany Graham (Furman), Ryen Frazier (NC State), Anne Akagi (Charleston Southern), and Samantha Nadel (George Washington University), all vying for victory. Notable open runners, including former course record holder Susanna Sullivan, Lauren Berman, Zoe Matherne, and Elizabeth Chikotas, also were part of the large lead pack which passed 400M in 68.0.
As the race progressed, Sullivan pushed the pace through the 800-meter mark, crossing through the midway point in an impressive time of 2:21.3. Trippett, Graham, Akagi, and Nadel maintained their positions at the forefront of the race, engaging in surges for the lead.Â
As the race reached the 1200-meter mark, the excitement continued to build, with Sullivan, Berman, Trippett, and Graham maintaining close contact. These exceptional athletes passed the 1200-meter mark in a blistering time of 3 minutes and 33.3 seconds, setting the stage for a thrilling and fiercely contested finish.
In the end, it was Trippett, the junior standout for the Spiders who showcased her remarkable speed and endurance, unleashing a devastating kick in the final 150 meters to secure victory with a time of 4:42.5. She claimed the well-deserved $1,250 prize for winning both the Collegiate Championship and open races. Lauren Berman closely followed with an impressive time of 4:43.5, while Susanna Sullivan, fresh off her exceptional 2:24:27 finish in April's London Marathon, secured the third spot on the podium with a time of 4:44.2. Elizabeth Chikotas finished fourth in 4:44.9, and Bethany Graham, an All-American athlete, claimed fifth place (2nd in Collegiate Championships) with a time of 4:48.7. Samantha Nadel (GWU) and Ryen Frazier (NC State) finished 3rd and 4th place respectively.Â
